The Nonconformity of Margaret Thatcher

Millions of words have been written about Margaret Thatcher since her death but few commentators have recognised the significance of her Nonconformist Christianity. Many have focused on her impact upon the social structure of Britain and her economic and political policies, but there has been little acknowledgment of the true source of her convictions which lay in her Methodist upbringing.

What are your views on this article by Dr Clifford Hill?

  1. I had not realised that she had such a strict Methodist upbringing.
But was did stick to her principles and was a strong lady.

  2. It will be so good to be able to comment on the aticles coming out of Issachar - and hopefully we will get some further thoughts on other issues this raises so that there can be good interaction

  3. Whatever one thinks of her politics one has to be challenged by her unselfish service and hard working on behalf of this nation. She was a remarkable woman who was able to not come under the attacks upon her but to hold fast and keep going.
It is very easy to run down people for their hard working and drive - rather than the effort of taking the log out of one's own eye before doing so.

  5. I am pleased to know you knoe=w have a blogg to which we can post our comments. I am also pleased that we shall be receiving hard copy of the news and prayer topics. Usually I print it out so I can read it properly and highlight the prayer points but sometimes my printer does not work or I run out of ink. So thanks for the change.

    1. The May monthly intercessionary prayer news highlighted the bringing forward of the Summer newsletter in hard copy format to June. These will continue to go out in June and November each year to those on our mailing list and will give a permanent reminder of that the ministry is achieving and waht is coming up as well as details of resources.

I am afraid we cannot send the monthly updates other than by e-mail so I am afraid you will need to keep viewing them on the internet. Sorry

  12. Hi John. I haven't read the article yet but thought I'd try this 'comment' space, which appears to be working well. All 7 comments so far are anon - in my case because I don't understand the other options.

  14. The article on Margaaret Thatcher and the Christian principles that influenced her seems a very fair summary of her contribution to the Nation. What a pity that the secular press have so little understanding of her Christian principles.

  16. The blog is working well thank you. I find Clifford Hill's insights very helpful; they certainly redress the balance and emphasise the important role played by nonconformity in this nation and hopefully remind us of the importance of holding fast to the truths of the Gospel in every area of life today. Very challenging. Jackie Misselbrook

  19. Well done, blog works perfectly. Excellent article about Margaret Thatcher, I remember the night she was elected for the first time, when asked what she was going to do first she replied "return to the faith of my ancestors", she also quoted the prayer "make me a channel of Your peace....."
