Storms over Britain - What is God Saying?

Britain's coasts were battered by unprecedented storms over the Christmas and New Year period. Near hurricane force winds and torrential rain left seven people dead and more than 130,000 homes affected by flood water, with more than 2,000 miles of coast land battered by storms and thousands of acres of prime farmland under water.

Why are churches silent?

Why have we had no word about the weather from any senior church leader? Are they afraid to talk about the questions that millions of people are asking not only in Britain and Europe, but in America, Australia, and many other parts of the world? Americans had barely recovered their breath from the Typhoon Haiyan disaster when they were hit by massive snowstorms and incredibly low temperatures whereas in Australia people have been dying from record-breaking heat waves, tennis players collapsed on court, while at the same time Central Europe has witnessed disastrous flooding. The whole world is being hit.

Outlook for 2014

"Watchman, what is left of the night?
Morning is coming, but also the night"
On New Year's Day I listened to a programme on the radio in which a number of BBC reporters discussed the outlook for the coming year. They began by looking back over the past year at the outstanding events of 2013. They also played recordings of their predictions in the New Year broadcast a year ago and they gave each other marks for their accuracy. Several of them had thought that the euro would not survive the year and there were a number of other things that were not right..

Judgement in Westminster

Debate on the Situation in Syria

No more war! This was the verdict of the House of Commons when they were recalled to consider the situation in Syria in response to the Prime Minister's call for a military response against Syria following a suspected chemical weapons attack on the outskirts of Damascus on 21 August, in which hundreds of people are reported to have died.

It's Not Cricket

Older readers, even those who are not really into sport, will remember the phrase "It's not cricket!" It meant, "It's not right" or "It's not fair". Cricket is not only a game with rules but with a long tradition of sportsmanship whereby you behaved in a way that upheld the rules; your behaviour was always righteous.

When playing the game of cricket if you knew you had nicked the ball (touched it with your bat) and it was caught by the wicket-keeper or another fielder, you immediately walked to the pavilion, even if the umpire had not spotted it. But that's not so with today's cricketers.

Opening the Eyes of the Blind

There are those who are blind and know it, and there are those who claim to see and are blind. This is the situation in Britain today in both the church and the nation. We have had the word of God for centuries - it has been clearly revealed to us, so we cannot say that we have not heard the truth. Yet we have deliberately turned away from the truth, despising our Judeo /Christian heritage, selling our birth-right for a mess of secular/humanist pottage.

Is Retirement a Blessing or a Curse?

Recycling the Saints

I've known so many men and women, looking forward to retirement; they suddenly stop work, and within a year they are dead. Recent research shows that retirement is bad for us. This is especially true of those who have carried a lot of responsibility in their job and have thrown all their energies into their work and then suddenly stop. The shock to their system, both emotionally and physically can be lethal.
